We are ScanTech Digital

We carry out surveys of buildings and other assets using 360-degree cameras, lasers, drones and a whole range of other equipment. We also create digital versions of these buildings including 3D models.

You’ve seen one of our point cloud survey targets. What is a point cloud survey?  Well, imagine you have a camera that can capture not just pictures, but also how far away each part of the picture is. A point cloud survey uses a special kind of camera – a laser scanner – that does exactly that. Just like a laser measure you can buy from a DIY store, it takes lots of measurements of a space or object to figure out where everything is located and how it looks in 3 dimensions (3D).

How Point Cloud technology works

The scanner sends out laser beams in every direction. When these beams hit a hard surface like a building, a tree, or any other object, they bounce back to the scanner. The scanner records how long it takes for each laser to return, and this tells it how far away each point is. All these points create a “cloud” of dots, and each dot has its own set of coordinates that tell you its position in space.

The result? A very detailed 3D model made up of millions of these tiny points. This model can be used by architects to create or update building plans, by engineers to design machines or parts, or by video game developers to make realistic 3D environments.

In simpler terms, a point cloud survey is a way to create a highly accurate 3D map of a physical space or object, using a tool that measures distances using laser beams.  The lasers are Class 1 lasers which means it’s safe to be around them with no protection required.”

After gathering the necessary data with the 3D laser scanners, we assemble a comprehensive 3D model of your building or indoor space, allowing you to plan and complete projects much more efficiently.
